MOURARIA
If, in the past, it was a much more hectic and rundown neighborhood, it is becoming a very hip and popular place.
It is the most multicultural district of the city; a total of 56 nationalities coexist there, most of them from Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan and Mozambique.
However, the Mouraria has not lost its authenticity, between its decrepit walls and laundry drying windows.
Located between Martim Moniz and the São Jorge Castle, to feel the atmosphere, you have to get lost in the alleys. They are sometimes no more than one meter wide. One has the impression to walk directly in the houses of Lisbon.

THE HISTORY
The Mouraria is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon. The Moors lived there after the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 until their expulsion in the 15th century.
It is in the heart of its winding streets that fado was born, a melancholy music that comes from the basfonds of the Portuguese capital.
Severa, the fado singer known in Portugal in the nineteenth century, lived here. It is said that Severa fell in love with a count and this is where fado appears in the aristocratic halls. In the twentieth century, Fernando Maurício, considered as the "king of the fado of Mouraria", lived there too. Rua do Capelão is part of the iconography of fado. It is also in Mouraria that Mariza, the most international fado singer, grew up.
